The Original Cat Action Trust - Registered Charity No. 1063947
The Original Cat Action Trust, the pioneer society for ferals, was founded in 1977 to help the feral cat. Feral cats are domestic cats living wild, either because they and their descendants have strayed from home or more commonly because they are unwanted and have been abandoned. AND THEY MULTIPLY... a healthy female can give birth to up to 120 kittens in her life time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Feral cats do not walk alone; they gather in colonies wherever they find food and shelter - in back yards, building sites, in hospital grounds, in every suburban corner. They are the inhabitants of dereliction. Soon the neighbourhood gets over-run - the cats are destroyed and before long, a new colony arrives to replace them.
The Cat Action Trust was founded by people who thought this slaughter of innocent cats both cruel and senseless. How much better to control the cat population, to contain and maintain it. So, volunteers visited the cat colonies, trapped the cats, took them to the vets to be neutered, tamed the kittens and found them good homes, and returned those adult cats that were too old to change their feral ways to their sites.
Then C.A.T. organised feeding rotas, kept an eye open for any new arrivals that might need a trip to the vet. The wisdom of this work was swiftly appreciated and not least by the cats - some of whom found themselves on payrolls as a sort of "securicorps" of rat catchers, instead of being classified as a public nuisance.
AND TODAY...there are many Branches around the country trapping, neutering and caring about the ferals. Many thousands of feral cats have been neutered, but there is a great deal still to be done. WE NEED MORE BRANCHES. There are still many areas where there are no Cat Action Trust Branches: we constantly seek those dedicated men and women who will get together and tackle this demanding, essential, humane task.
